What can you and I do for someone suffering from depression?

First, you need to understand what depression is and how it affects people.

Depression is a common mental disorder that causes people to experience depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration. 

Depression is different from feeling down or sad, which everyone can feel at different times.  Feeling sad or down is usually temporary feelings and we can generally pick ourselves up and move on.

Watch out for symptoms of Depression that include:

  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
  • Withdrawal from social activities.
  • Sadness.
  • Irritability.
  • Inability to concentrate.
  • Disrupted sleep.
  • Fatigue or loss of energy.
  • Appetite changes

Depression should only be diagnosed by a medical professional but if those around you seem to be struggling, you can try and help. In Christchurch, New Zealand we have a very high rate of depression.  Rates skyrocketed after the earthquakes.  This led to years of stress and broken homes for many.  You would hear of one family getting past the challenges and then hear to ten who were still battling to get their home replaced.  It shouldn’t be like this but unfortunately, it has been.  There have been many deaths of elderly people and although it is not directly recorded as being earthquake related, I know my Mother’s passing was associated with earthquake stress.

My friend Raewyn posted this recently and she has given her permission for me to share:  “It’s funny cause 3 months ago I would have said “yeah right”, now I actually believe and am sharing because it has really worked for me. Three months ago, each day and nearly every single day, I would lie on my bed for around 3-4 hours sleeping. Kids would come home from school and there I was asleep. Got up, made dinner, back to bed and played games on my iPad and boom, sleep for the rest of the night. Now!! no more lying down in the middle of the day.”

What Raewyn is talking about is the Triangle of Health. People, including myself, have found it life-changing. It had helped greatly with stress and other issues. I have been dealing with some very difficult situations in the last few months and I don’t know how I would have dealt without this.
